Students Tour Arizona Universities

Desert Hills students recently made the rounds of Arizona's colleges and universities. In Block 4, a large group of students visited the campus of Arizona State University, and later traveled to Northern Arizona University and Chandler Gilbert Community College.

"Students really get a lot out of these trips," says Fawn Eaton, Director of Academic Services. "This is a real opportunity for them to get a sense of what life is like on the campus of a major university." On March 26, students and Desert Hills instructors visited ASU's Tempe campus.

"The ASU tour brought the reality of college to life," says Sariah Bunker, a DHHS 11th grader. "I learned a lot." Bunker says she plans to attend community college after graduation, and then transfer to a university in Hawaii.

Desert Hills students traveled to Chandler Gilbert Community College on April 8, and to NAU in Flagstaff on April 16.

Accounting Course Makes A Difference For DHHS Senior

Ryan Geiger, a senior at Desert Hills High School, wasn't sure what career he might pursue after high school . But that changed when he entered Accounting 101 at Desert Hills High School, a course taught in conjunction with Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Now, he says, he wants to be an accountant.

"I really want to pursue this," he says. "I've really learned a lot from Mrs. Jones, and from this class."

The Accounting course is taught by veteran Desert Hills Business Instructor Jaci Jones, and offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn essential business practices as they work towards their high school diploma. Over the course of the block, they also earn dual-enrollment college credit from Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Seats are still open in two courses to be taught this year by Mrs. Jones in conjunction with Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Courses offered will include Business Management in Block 1, and Accounting in Block 3.

Business Management describes for students the characteristics and activities of local, national and international business. Accounting covers the principles of accounting - the universal language of business - and is a required class for anyone thinking of pursuing a college degree in any business-related field.
